The 33rd Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC), currently underway in Helsingør, Denmark, addresses critical issues affecting the region.
A special highlight was meeting H.M. King Frederik. In his speech, the King talked about the royal family visiting the Baltic States shortly after we regained independence. In 1992, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark became the first monarch to visit independent Baltic States. The King recalled witnessing the joy that gaining independence brought to the people of the Baltics.
At the conference, discussions underscored the importance of collaboration among democratic Baltic Sea countries to tackle shared challenges, with a particular focus on regional security, cooperation, and the engagement of youth in political processes.
President of the Baltic Assembly Andrius Kupčinskas believes that the cooperation of the democratic Baltic Sea countries is important for the Baltic States. “This cooperation format allows our countries to include in conversation and problem-solving the challenges of the Baltic States that need the support of like-minded countries. One of such challenges is protecting the EU’s Eastern border,” the President highlighted.
Speaker of the Danish Parliament Søren Gade addressed the participants of the 33rd BSPC by saying that he is impressed by the determination of the Ukrainian people for freedom and democracy. He believed it is important to help Ukraine fight the Russian invasion of the country. “Their fight is also our fight,” said the Speaker.
President of the BSPC Henrik Møller, among other things, talked about ensuring safety in the Baltic Sea region, as the collective action of the democratic Baltic Sea countries is of the essence on this road. He also emphasized the need to include the region's youth in political discussions about regional development and the success of the annual Baltic Sea Parliamentary Youth Forum.
The conference continues with a strong focus on regional cooperation and security, alongside the empowerment of the next generation of leaders.
