The Baltic Assembly highlights that artificial intelligence is the key to fostering innovation, driving economic growth and strengthening digital sovereignty

On 21 March 2025, the delegation of the Baltic Assembly attended the session of the Benelux Parliament focusing on artificial intelligence and its opportunities and challenges.

President of the Baltic Assembly Jānis Vucāns addressed colleagues from the Benelux Parliament by stating that, today artificial intelligence has a transformative potential in fostering innovation, driving economic growth and strengthening digital sovereignty across the Baltic region, however growing challenges that still exist need to be taken into regard.

He continued by highlighting the Baltic States as key players in artificial intelligence. National strategies across Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania are actively promoting its adoption within both public and private sectors. This commitment is reflected in their performance in the Government Artificial Intelligence Readiness Index, where all three countries rank above 50 globally.

He mentioned that the Baltic States are actively collaborating in the field, with the first “Baltic AI Hackathon,” held by the technical universities of the Baltic countries in 2024. Additionally, the Baltic States are working with the Nordic Council of Ministers for Digitalization, which plans to improve artificial intelligence skills, make data easier to use and create guidelines.

“By working together, we will not only secure our place as leaders in AI innovation but also set an example to others. By sharing our thoughts, best practices and policy approaches during the meetings of the Baltic Assembly and the Benelux Parliament like we are doing today, we can work together to build a more responsible and forward-thinking digital society,” he stated.

At the meeting, the delegation of the Baltic Assembly consisted of the President of the Baltic Assembly Jānis Vucāns and Vice Presidents of the Baltic Assembly Timo Suslov and Giedrius Drukteinis.
