Meeting of the Natural Resources and Environment Committee to be held in Vilnius


On 6-7 March 2025, the meeting of the Natural Resources and Environment Committee of the Baltic Assembly will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania. 

During the meeting, parliamentarians will discuss the key environmental challenges of the Baltic States. The meeting will primarily focus on fostering regional cooperation in the fields of sustainable agriculture, forestry, and marine biodiversity protection.

Fostering cooperation of the Baltic States: towards a more sustainable agriculture and forestry together

Chaired by Jānis Grasbergs, Chair of the Natural Resources and Environment Committee, discussions will commence by addressing the increasing challenges posed by climate change in agriculture and forestry. This part of the meeting will also delve into how the Baltic States can jointly improve their unity and cooperation in these fields. 

An introductory speech will be given by Kęstutis Mažeika, Chair of the Seimas Committee on Rural Affairs. The meeting will also feature insights from governmental representatives of the Baltic States who will discuss their respective countries' positions.

Cooperation of the Baltic States in protecting biodiversity in the Baltic Sea

Jānis Grasbergs will continue chairing the second session regarding the protection of biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. This session will provide an overview of the current state of marine ecosystems and the main threats they face. Discussions will include the importance of Natura 2000 sites and sustainable agriculture and fishing. 

An introductory report will be given by Rüdiger Strempel, Executive Secretary of the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM), on the cooperation between the Baltic States and HELCOM in protecting biodiversity in the Baltic Sea.
