Joint meeting of the Education, Science and Culture Committee and the Security and Defence Committee to be held in Tartu


On 15-16 January 2026, the joint meeting of the Education, Science and Culture Committee and the Security and Defence Committee will be held in Tartu, Estonia.  The meeting will bring together parliamentarians, experts from the Baltic States and international guests to discuss security and defence education, as well as fostering research within the field. 

Shared learning for shared security in the Baltic States: building joint defence and security education programs

Chaired by Peeter Tali, Chair of the Security and Defence Committee, the first session of the meeting will touch on the current status of security and defence education programmes in the Baltic States, and how to bolster them by creating a platform meant for material sharing. Additionally, Guðmundur Ari Sigurjónsson, Chair of the Committee for Knowledge and Culture in the Nordic Region, will share international experience. 

Fostering military and defence research cooperation in the Baltic States

The second session of the meeting, chaired by Margit Sutrop, Chair of the Education, Science and Culture Committee, will highlight the current state of affairs regarding military and defence research cooperation, and how a shared ecosystem and international programmes can accelerate Baltic cooperation. Guðmundur Ari Sigurjónsson will also share the experience of the Nordic region. 

Additionally, Alvydas Šiuparis, Commandant of the Baltic Defence College, will share the experience of the Baltic Defence College as a best practice example. Parliamentarians, international guests and experts will also get a chance to visit the Centre for War and Disaster Medicine, as well as hear a briefing from the Head of the Centre, Neve Vendt
