On 19-20 March, the parliamentarians of the Baltic States participated in the 7th meeting of the BSPC Working Group on Climate Change and Biodiversity.
During the meeting, the parliamentarians of the Baltic Sea states discussed many issues related to sustainability and protecting the climate and its biodiversity, especially in the Arctic. Numerous experts were invited to inform the parliamentarians about their experience and good practices, such as experts from the Norwegian Polar Institute, the Institute of Marine Research and the Arctic Council Secretariat.
Multiple times the significance of raising the importance of the Arctic and the need to protect it for the future generations to come was highlighted, as the Arctic is warming and changing three times as fast as the rest of the globe. The meeting continued with a discussion about the current state of the working group and further work, especially the upcoming Annual Conference in Berlin and the final meeting of the working group in Gdansk. Lastly, the participants went on a Polaria tour and visited the Polar Museum.
The delegation of the Baltic Assembly consisted of Vice President Jānis Vucāns and Member of the Security and Defence Committee Andrius Mazuronis.
