On 6-7 February 2025, the meeting of the Economics, Energy and Innovation Committee of the Baltic Assembly will be held in Tallinn, Estonia.
During the meeting, parliamentarians will discuss the topic of logistics in the Baltic States, and how it can be used to enhance regional integration and connectivity. Further discussions will include updates on the Rail Baltica project and its challenges. Finally, parliamentarians will share their views regarding the creation of the Baltic energy strategy.
Regional integration through logistics: Enhancing Baltic connectivity
Chaired by Andris Kulbergs, Chair of the Economics, Energy and Innovation Committee, discussions will delve into the current status of logistics network connectivity in the Baltic States, and how the Baltic States can jointly improve and modernize the industry. Special attention will be granted to the merger of national port development plans and electronic vignette systems.
An introductory report will be given by lecturer Normunds Kozlovskis from Turiba University regarding improving competitiveness for logistics service providers in the Baltic region. The meeting will also feature insights from governmental representatives of the Baltic States who will discuss their respective countries' positions.
Status update on the challenges in the Rail Baltica project
Andris Kulbergs will continue chairing the second session regarding the status update on the Rail Baltica project. Key discussions will focus on identifying major obstacles and strategies to bridge the funding gap. Additionally, the session will address the necessary legislative changes to support project implementation and the management of regional infrastructure aspects.
Marko Kivila, Interim Chairperson of the Management Board and CEO of RB Rail AS, will provide a report on the main challenges faced by the Rail Baltica project and how the Baltic States can best address them.
Moving forward with enhancing regional energy networks and interconnections through the creation of the Baltic energy strategy
Lastly, the meeting will conclude on the topic of enhancing regional energy networks and interconnections through the creation of the Baltic energy strategy. Discussions will include a status update on the strategy, efforts to accelerate the synchronization of Baltic electricity grids with the European network, and initiatives to enhance physical energy connectivity. The session will also address challenges in regional cooperation for wind energy production. Additionally, measures to strengthen the protection of energy infrastructure will be explored.
