On 16-17 January 2025, the joint meeting of the Education, Science and Culture Committee and the Security and Defence Committee of the Baltic Assembly will be held in Riga, Latvia.
During the meeting, parliamentarians will discuss comprehensive defence in the education systems of the Baltic States, with a focus on strengthening cooperation between military and educational institutions. Further discussions will include fostering resilience and patriotism in Baltic youth through conscription.
Comprehensive defence in the education systems of the Baltic States
Chaired by Juris Viļums, Chair of the Education, Science and Culture Committee, discussions will delve into the role of comprehensive defence in the education systems of the Baltic States. Discussions will cover strengthening cooperation between military and educational institutions through incorporating defence and resilience themes into school curriculums and establishing a joint teacher training in crisis preparedness and emergency response.
An introductory report will be given by Dr. Jānis Bērziņš from the National Defence Academy of Latvia regarding comprehensive defence in the education systems of the Baltic States. The meeting will also feature insights from governmental representatives of the Baltic States who will discuss their respective countries' positions on comprehensive defence in education. Adding a broader perspective, Lars Mejern Larsson from the Nordic Council will share experiences from the Nordic countries.
Fostering resilience and patriotism in Baltic youth through conscription
Chaired by Uģis Rotbergs, Chair of the Security and Defence Committee, the second session of the meeting will focus on fostering resilience and patriotism in Baltic youth through conscription. Discussions will cover strengths and challenges of the conscription models in the Baltic States and how alignment in policies and conscription standards in the Baltic States could improve them.
