In 2025, Latvia will take over the Presidency of the Baltic Assembly and the Baltic Council of Ministers. Latvia is taking over the Presidency at a time when the Baltic States are facing several common challenges, including the ongoing brutal and unjustified Russian aggressive war in Ukraine, environmental risks, and rapid digitalization. Therefore, next year the Baltic Assembly will focus on enhancing regional security, prosperity, innovation, and sustainability. The motto of the Baltic Assembly in 2025 will be ‘Growing strong together’.
President of the Baltic Assembly Jānis Vucāns highlighted that this year the Baltic Assembly will continue to stand firmly with Ukraine “The Baltic States, having in their history the period of occupation and struggles for independence, understand deeply the significance of Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty and democracy. Therefore, the Baltic Assembly will maintain a firm and unwavering commitment to stand alongside Ukraine in the face of ruthless Russian aggression. The conflict is not only a territorial dispute but a direct challenge to democratic values and national sovereignty, underscoring the need for the Baltic States to continue their strong and multifaced support. Thus, the efforts will not be limited to helping Ukraine survive this war - it will also focus on ensuring that Ukraine emerges stronger and more united,” highlighted Jānis Vucāns.
The programme of the Latvian Presidency provides a clear framework for parliamentary cooperation of the Baltic States to further enhance regional security, prosperity, innovation, and sustainability. The Baltic States have all the necessary tools to stay stong together.
The priorities of the Baltic Assembly in 2025
1. Safeguarded, prosperous and innovative Baltic region
2. Interconnected energy, transport and digital policy
3. Protected, biodiverse and sustainable Baltic Sea
The path to a stronger future for the Baltic States lies in our unity. For this reason the Baltic States must focus on security, economic growth, innovations, interconnections and sustainable development. By fostering collaboration in areas such as digital technology and renewable energy, it is possible to create a thriving economic ecosystem, which ensures a prosperous future for generations to come.
Enhancing collective security will be one of the key pillars of the efforts this year. It is planned to address crucial topics such as maritime cybersecurity, fostering cooperation of the military industry in the Baltic States, and building societal resilience and patriotism among the younger generation in the context of conscription. To navigate the growing complexities of European security, the Baltic Assembly under Latvia’s Presidency will work closely with Benelux, Nordic, and Visegrad countries. Also, cooperation with Eastern Partnership countries will continue, aiming to share insights and resources across the region.
